BookMooch Discussion Forums

Getting Started

  • New members' posts are moderated and do not appear immediately. Do not repost just because you don't see your post immediately. Please note: All posts made via the web interface get moderated. However, if you post by email, only your first post gets moderated.
  • If you use Gmail and post to the forums via email, you may see your posts twice. There's no need to apologize for double-posting, because you didn't. This happens because Gmail shows you a record of the email you sent to the list, and then you receive another email once it is posted. You can set your forum account options to not send a copy of your postings by visiting the forum and clicking My Account --> Advanced. Set "See your postings" to "No, I do not want to receive an email copy of my postings."
  • Don't forget to include your username or (better) a link to your bio or inventory in your post, no matter what the subject is. If you're asking a question, that information will likely make it easier to answer. If you're introducing yourself, it will give people an opportunity to check out your inventory.

Forum Etiquette

  • If you are posting about your inventory or deals you are running, please say whether you ship just in your country (and what your country is!) or worldwide, preferably in the subject line.
  • Please treat other members with respect. It's OK to disagree with another member or his/her ideas, but do so respectfully.
  • Remember that, as with all internet communication, the tone of your post may be misinterpreted. Before posting, please check your post to see if other people are likely to take what you say in the way you mean, and, if not, revise before posting. If such a misunderstanding does occur, clarify what you meant, and then apologize if necessary.
  • In the same vein, if you see a post that you find rude, assume good faith on the other member's part and try to clarify possible misunderstandings rather than attacking the poster.
  • There is no edit button for forum posts, so make sure to check your post carefully (spelling, tone, URLs, etc.) before submitting it.
  • It's generally best to report suspected BookMooch abuse to the Abuse Team directly rather than posting on-forum. Similarly, if an Abuse Team member asks you to send details of suspicious behavior to him/her, do so off-forum. Asking for assistance in reporting abuse or what to do in a certain situation is OK, but once it gets to the level of actually filing an abuse report, take it off-forum.
  • As a matter of courtesy when responding to a post, you should quote just enough of the post to clarify what you are responding to. When people reply using email they frequently include all of the previous post, which may have included previous posts too, and so on. The same posts are duplicated multiple times which makes the forum harder to read, wastes bandwidth, wastes database space, and increases the amount of time and processing required to perform searches.

Technical Advice

  • You will be identified by your email address when posting. If there is some reason that others would need to know you by your BookMooch ID when posting (such as when you want someone to look at your inventory or wishlist, or when seeking help over transaction troubles), provide a link to your inventory, bio, or wishlist (whichever is appropriate to the situation).
  • Additionally, people who read posts on the website will only see the first part of your e-mail address (the part before the @). Thus, posting your BookMooch ID or an appropriate link is highly encouraged.
  • If someone posts without posting their inventory link, you may be able to find their account using the Browse feature. [1] Enter their email address in the Member's Inventory box. However, this will only work if they are posting from an email address that they have registered with BookMooch. Similarly, you can view the profile of a person with email address lookup feature. [2]
